A Legacy of Hospitality in Copper Harbor
Nestled at the very tip of Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula, The Mariner North is more than a place to stay—it is a cornerstone of Copper Harbor's story, a gathering place shaped by generations of travelers, adventurers, and locals alike.
Rooted in History
The story of The Mariner North begins in the 1920s, when Copper Harbor was emerging as a premier destination along the shores of Lake Superior. Originally known as The Pontiac, the property quickly became a vibrant inn, restaurant, and bar—welcoming visitors arriving by land and by water.
During this time, Copper Harbor was transforming into a summer resort community. The ferry service connecting the mainland to Isle Royale National Park brought waves of explorers through town, while the establishment of Fort Wilkins State Park anchored the region in both history and natural beauty. The Pontiac stood at the center of it all—a place where stories were shared, meals were enjoyed, and memories were made.
A New Chapter Begins
Decades later, the property evolved into the Keweenaw Inn North, continuing its tradition of hospitality. Then in 1977, a new vision took shape. The property was purchased and renamed The Mariner North, marking the beginning of a new era.
With a deep appreciation for Copper Harbor's potential as a year-round destination, early efforts focused on expanding winter tourism. The development of snowmobiling programs helped bring life to the quiet winter months, transforming the region into a destination not just for summer visitors—but for adventurers in every season.
In the early 1980s, the lodge expanded significantly, nearly doubling in size and adding new guest rooms to accommodate the growing number of travelers seeking the beauty of the Keweenaw.
Rebuilding with Purpose
In 1991, tragedy struck when a devastating fire destroyed the entire complex. But the spirit of The Mariner North—and the community around it—proved stronger than the loss.
By 1994, the main lodge was rebuilt and reopened, signaling not just a return—but a renewal. Over the next several years, cabins, motel units, and a game room were added, creating the full resort experience guests enjoy today.
The Mariner North became, once again, a hub of energy—welcoming families, outdoor enthusiasts, and those simply looking to disconnect and experience the raw beauty of Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
A Four-Season Destination
Today, Copper Harbor is known as one of the Midwest's most unique outdoor destinations—and The Mariner North sits right at the heart of it.
